Breakfast power thickshake! Delicious, healthy and super cheap too!

You know how healthy drinks always taste healthy? Well this doesn't; it's sweet, indulgent but is full of goodness to start your day right! Don't worry - no Chia seeds or organic vanilla bean paste or essence of Wheatgrass or any other hard to find and overpriced ingredients. A thick, cold, breakfast smoothie/milkshake with power ingredients which are easy to find and are probably in your cupboard already. Not only is this recipe delicious it's super cheap too!

Your power ingredients are oats to reduce bloating, keep your heart healthy and release energy slowly throughout the day, Bananas to provide sweetness, vitamin, B6, C and fill you up. Cayenne pepper will speed up your metabolism to burn more calories throughout the day and provide energy.

Ingredients
  • 4 Tbsp Oats
  • 1 sliced banana, frozen
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Approx 1/2 pint milk
  • 1/2 Tbsp - 1 Tbsp Cocoa powder according to taste

Optional extras - Replace the cocoa powder with a large tablespoon of nutella, also add smooth peanut butter to really yummy it up!

1.) Use a milling blade (that's the 2 bladed flat one in the photo above) to blend your oats into a fine fine powder, as fine as you can.

2.) Put all the other ingredients into your blender and switch back to the normal blade. Give 3-6 shakes of the cayenne pepper - don't worry, it doesn't really affect the taste but it does provide a nice kick!

3.) Swap back to your normal blade and blend everything together until smooth. Beware of hidden chunks of frozen banana that don't quite blend!!

4.) Done. Enjoy!! Be aware that the oats will slowly sink to the bottom so take a spoon or straw to stir it as you drink it.

This is brilliant for when friends are visiting to make them feel spoiled, and a  wonderful hangover cure for when you just can't handle proper food! (not that I would know of course...). I keep a couple of little tubs of frozen banana in the freezer so they're always ready. It's cool, sweet, filling, thick and delicious. Put a fancy straw in it and enjoy outside on a hot day or for a meal on the go when you don't have the time (or the inclination) to stop and cook.

    1. Absolutely! Just make sure you blend them nice and finely and stir with a spoon every now and again as you drink. I try to fit in oats anywhere I can! :-)
